Liam Smith defeats Anthony Fowler in a dominant display to win the ‘Battle of Liverpool’ on Saturday with an eighth-round knockout.

“It was a great fight,” Smith said.

“I started slow I think, but from start to finish we did a good job. I said all along that you cant buy experience.”

Smith earned victory in his showdown with Fowler after flooring his Liverpudlian rival twice on his way to victory.

Fowler had started the contest well and got the upper hand by landing a string of punches.

And he displayed his confidence by inflicting a cut to Smith just above his left eye in the opening round.

But Smith, the former WBO light-middleweight champion, went on to dominate the bout despite suffering a cut above his right eye in the first round.

He knocked Fowler to the canvas in the fifth before going on to win the fight with a left hook in the eighth.

Less than 24 hours later, Liam Smith got on the scoresheet for his Sunday League team Custys FC just hours after knocking out Anthony Fowler at the M&S Bank Arena. The 33-year-old regularly turns out for the team and wore the number nine shirt on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier in the evening, Troy Williamson became the new British super-welterweight champion after he stopped Ted Cheeseman with a 10th-round knockout.

Shannon Courtenay had endured more disappointment as she was beaten by Jamie Mitchell on a majority decision after losing her WBA bantamweight belt on the scales.

Courtenay, who was unable to make the scales at Friday’s weigh-in, an was outworked by the American Jamie Mitchell, who claimed the WBA title with scores of 96-94 and 97-93, and the third judge scoring it a draw.
